The sign of ?

Matt_c has a thoughtful post on the new Nike ad featuring Rooney painted with the red cross of St George.

My first thought at seeing the ad?

God, what an ugly bugger Rooney is...

Of course, another angle for a semiotic analysis would be to compare representations of Rooney with representations of Beckham at the same age. Clearly the difference would be so massive (so massive in fact I might be compelled to pronounce it 'ma-who-sive') - and whether you could argue this had any correlation to dominant ideas of changing British/English masculinities. Interesting...

God, it's 8:47am and I'm already wondering about shit like this. I need a life...

As Germaine Greer once said about Rooney, 'That boy's got a face like a fist!'

Beckham did do Christ photos — there was a cover for Time Out, around the last World Cup I think — but I seem to remember they were a bit less, umm, full-blooded than the Bleedin' Rooney pics.
