Radio Four "In Our Time"

Melvyn Bragg's show this week is on Harriet Beecher Stowe.

I've only read Uncle Tom's Cabin - are you a fan? It's certainly an interesting book - I found it hard not to find the melodrama amusing but it felt pretty radical in many ways.

Well, its a sentimental novel (as in its genre) so it has rather specific style issues that shape its treatment of the issues.

You should listen to the prog. Even though MB was a (lot) of an arse. Especially given that his knowledge basically came from his researchers asking the contributors for everything they know so MB gets a script and the contributors have to work on their wits live.
