Is your favourite movie character mentioned?

Check out the comments on the Shakespeare's Sister "QotD" on favourite movie characters. There are some great examples identified, although it's hard to know whether the commentators are praising the writing (who wrote the character), the director (who encourage the performance) or the actor (who embodied the character).

For me, it is very hard to disentangle the three issues, but the over-emphasis on the actor in the responses seems to suggest that we elide the actor and the role all too easily. No wonder people then get cranky about fans confusing them with their roles...

Mmm. I think mine would be "Dawn Weiner" from Welcome to the Dollhouse (I love love love that movie!) and "Luisa" from Y Tu Mama Tambien (and, yes, it has everything to do with the fact she get's to have a threesome with Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna).

Both brilliant choices guys! I gave away my copy of It Could Happen to You to a rampant Nick Cage fan (yes, she is a friend). it is a very sweet movie...

And Y Tu Mama Tambien is just SUCH a glorious film. And she is a great character.

For me, the Coen brothers write some great characters: the Dude and Marge are just two that come immediately to mind.

Well I wouldn't be who I am today without the Goblin King...

Haha. Marty McFly is unassailably cool, so I'd probably have to go with him, I think.

John Wayne used to play John Wayne pretty well.
