Interesting piece on the Royal Court theatre

Would be interested to know what Anna thinks of this polemic.

Well done, Lisa, consider yourself covered in kisses, er, metaphorically speaking, of course, that essay on the Royal Court had me in stitches. A sort of Left-wing equivalent of an old Tory buffer in Tunbridge Wells rattling his Daily 'Torygraph' and thundering that the country is going to the dogs. Pricelss!

The writer's execrable taste is made embarrassingly clear in his/her opinion that Caryl Churchill's woeful play "Cloud 9" is even worth comparison with Stoppard's laundry list, let alone his magnificent and intelligent play "Rock 'n' Roll".

Anyway, thanks, I wouldn't have missed it for the world!

The Royal Court should be primarily about new writers and writing, but yes, it seems that this writer had something of an ulterior motive - ie. to air his/her dislike of Tom Stoppard. I'm afraid a lot of what goes on theatre-wise in London passes me by - the 'regions' are where its all happening ;)
