Funniest thing I read today (regarding fan-fiction)

Hilarious
I guess I was put off Fan / Slash Fiction slightly when someone sent me a link to a story that turned out to be a highly improbable piece of magical realist porn featuring several Man United players. Shudder.
*snort*

It DOES sound grim doesn't it!?

On a more serious note, the original piece by Jessica Reed does raise some interesting points about fan-fiction. I'd only make one proviso and that is 'why does it have to be the preserve of teenagers'? For sure, she's starting from a standpoint of reading RL/character or celebrity fic which generally runs to different expectations. But where writers online take existing characters and build new narratives, these can often be incredibly well produced: polished, edited, copy-checked, and critiqued giving eager readers extended scenes, alternate universes (not just as a sci-fi concept but, if you like, stories outside of the original realm of the story canon) and answers to 'what if?'

There's bad writing everywhere - much of it legitimately published. Just because its online doesn't make it bad, in much the same way that we may defend blogging...

What makes our love a sin...

Just a little subtler than this was, but somehow still absolutely hysterical.

'Get off me, you maniac,' said the Master, wriggling frantically on the ground, but not wholly convincing anyone that he didn't enjoy rolling about with the Doctor a little too much.

It's wrong, it's just sooo wrong...

God, I do love reading fan-fic...

Oh dear me...

Be warned by the tags.

It's both utterly disturbing and horrifically funny.

I think this has been doing the rounds for over a week but I just found it buried in my Bloglines on Pete Ashton's weblog.

As Platypus said in the comments "Please stop making me pee myself. It is undignified."

I'm only amazed it took me this long to start looking...

Primeval.

Sigh. Am still enjoying the recollections of watching the series, am still enjoying re-watching it on DVD (and will be doing a full run-through one day next week when Cloud has returned to work!), and now I find...

... yes folks, despite all the criticisms and mixed reviews, and as proof that almost nothing can get past either fan-fiction or even slash-fiction writers, I find that Primeval has garnered its own little collections and musings of each. I'm particularly enjoying Learning Curve at the moment (it's up to part three at present) after really getting into their earlier fan-fiction for the series.

Whilst on the slash front, this gem of an overview from bigtitch at livejournal (where else) totally had me in stiches (and not a little delighted at those nice screen caps). Hee.

Why...?

... do so many journalists write about fan-, and especially slash-fiction as if it is some weird previously unheard-of phenomenon that they're just bringing to light?

Okay, sometimes some fiction is a little weird, but really... people, get a grip. After this long, how is it still possible for journalists to get away with writing with such google-eyed panic about the topic?
