I wish I could post the pictures, but I'm gonna assume enough of you can find a branch of H20- boulders in your area. If you can, take a look at the current brochure / magazine on Waterstone's recommendations for Xmas. At the back, they have a list of stores and in a sidebar there are three pics of new stores.
Pictures One and Two are quite what you would expect: peopled with staff and customers at the tills.
Picture Three...
Well, let's say it's slightly different...
I say, people of Essex, use your bookshop!

That geography 'o' level has proven useful.
Thanet is in Kent.
People of Kent rise up and buy some books.
Doh!
Can I just point out though, that it was you (Cloud/Wilson) who identified Thanet as Essex? As you say, Geography O level proved useful....
It's the South East, outside Nodnol.
That's all you need to know.
People of Kent / Essex / Wherever! Congratulations! Stay away from the Evil Empire that is Waterstones! Support your local independent booksellers! They will actually recommend and stock decent titles, and not just what the richest publishers can afford to put their money behind, ignoring small imprints and minor authors. And unlike the giant conglomorate that is Waterstones, they probably need your cash as well, just to stay open.
Actually Marie, you are of course TOTALLY right. I guess my point was that it was quite funny to see a shot of staff just standing at empty tills when the other two pics had a mix of staff and customers: it rather begged hte question "why use that picture?"!!
As someone who buys lots of second hand books, the indie stores are vital. though it has to be said Nottinhgam is not exactly over-run with bookshops of any shape/size or hue... H20boulders or otherwise. if there are hidden gems we don't know about, do tell us, but there is a real paucity of bookshops in the centre of Nottingham.
