The Doctor and Donna

The Doctor and Donna

Wow.

That's actually not a bad photo there...

Wow, she must be dead tall.

I alone among Whovians am actually excited about Donna. I really liked her in the Christmas Invasion and she's a great actress so if she's well written (big if) she's going to be fab.

I think a lot of (thought not all) male Who fans are probably having trouble getting their heads around the idea of a companion that they don't fancy. I suspect this refletcs the problem a lot of (though not all) male TV viewers have in general with female characters that they don't fancy and who are not playing an obvious 'not fancy' role: mother, judge, senior police officer... Like: what is the point of a young woman that I don't want to shag? I do not have a lot of sympathy with this position.

I am, however, willing to accept a straight "I don't like Catherine Tate" argument, as I would be freaking out if they cast (for example) Robson Green as The Doctor.

Fair point about Robson Green, though I should possibly acknowledge that against all sensible media advice this house has watched 'Wire in the Blood'.

On the topic of Donna/CT I know of at least one (female) friend who hates her with enough venom to feel that the show will probably lose her viewing come next season. Interestingly, though I don't think Cloudy Neil was as fond of the last Xmas ep as we both were of the first one, he does rather like the ginger one and on the basis of this photograph may well be rather more seduced by watching her than many other DW fans...

Her hair's a bit odd (ie. 80s flouncy fringe) but that's my only complaint.

I was surprised that although Runaway Bride was a *rather* average episode and I'd expected to not like her, I really liked Catherine Tate's Donna.

The one thing about Donna’s character that I think could be a factor for good story telling is for the Doctor to have a companion who is not so in to him. Donna does not think the Doctor is the greatest thing since sliced bread and isn’t afraid to call the Doctor on things when she feels he is wrong. Rose was in love with the Doctor and Martha seems to really dig the Doctor too (at least so far- I am only part way through the 3rd season); Donna may actually be a refreshing change. I just think it would be cool for the Doctor to have a companion that questions him more and doesn’t idolize him so much.

Peace,

James

Her imdb entry says she's 5'8", which seeing as DT must be six-two when he's in Big Hair mode looks about right. And, refreshingly, she's older than me. It isn't right when I'm older than the Doctor.

I am looking forward to the Donna/Martha/Doctor dynamic. That should be fun.

Ooh, you're right, I wonder what Martha will think of Donna, and vice versa...

Well, she's no Rose, but she is loud enough to stand up to him.

I'm looking forward to it. As James said, it will be nice not to have a besotted sidekick. And the possibilities when Martha returns and we have one besotted and one not: splendid.

I don't especially fancy her, but thenm I didn't particularly fancy Martha or Rose either. I am hwever awaiting the next Christmas special and its guest star with keen anticipation!
